England confirmed XI to face Mexico in World Cup round of 16

England edged past DR Congo on Wednesday to set up a mouth-watering round of 16 encounter with Mexico at the 2026 World Cup.

Held at the famous Azteca Stadium, the weather forecast looks cool enough, but England will be tested by the altitude in Mexico City, with the game played at 2,240 metres above sea level - nearly twice the height of Ben Nevis.

Thomas Tuchel faced plenty of scrutiny over his squad selection prior to the World Cup and has faced even more since the tournament began.

The injury to Reece James seemed to surprise nobody but Tuchel himself, and the decision not to call up a right-back following Tino Livramento's absence looked even more questionable with Djed Spence struggling against DR Congo.

The right-back position has been subjected to great scrutiny following the injuries to James and Jarell Quansah, while the performance of Spence against DR Congo did little to inspire confidence.

There were suggestions Declan Rice, who deputised in the position during the final 20 minutes in Atlanta and performed admirably, could fill in, but Quansah has been deemed fit enough to start.

The centre-back partnership of Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi remains, while Nico O'Reilly continues to excel at left-back.

While the inclusion of Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane is a no-brainer, Tuchel's personnel on the flank was up for debate.

Following their impacts in the second half against DR Congo, Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka have been rewarded with starts over Marcus Rashford and Noni Madueke, who both flattered to deceive.

Gordon was heavily influential in both of England's goals in Atlanta and he will be hoping to produce a similar impact against Mexico, while Saka will be looking to put his fitness concerns behind him with a statement performance at the World Cup.

Confirmed England XI to face Mexico

Pickford; Quansah, Konsa, Guehi, O'Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane.
