Eddie Howe has resigned as Newcastle United head coach after nearly five years in charge.
David Ornstein revealed on X on Thursday morning: "EXCLUSIVE: Eddie Howe set to leave Newcastle United. All parties initially chose to continue but 48yo has informed #NUFC of decision to take break & will depart after 5yrs as head coach. Matthias Jaissle of Al Ahli lined up as replacement"
Speculation has surrounded Howe's future for months with Newcastle struggling both domestically and in Europe last season following a disastrous summer transfer window in which Alexander Isak eventually departed on 1st September, with nearly £250m spent on Anthony Elanga, Malick Thiaw, Jacob Ramsey, Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.
Newcastle's financial issues have been laid bare this summer, with Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali already departing and Bruno Guimaraes heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.
The Magpies have recouped around £180m but have thus far spent around £110m on Ewan Jaouen, Bazoumana Traore, Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba, missing out on key targets such as Johan Manzambi and James Trafford once again.
Howe publicly voiced his frustration at the club's situation 12 months ago and it appears to have worsened over the last year, with the former Bournemouth boss now stepping down after nearly five years at the helm.
Matthias Jaissle is set to step into the St James' Park dugout in his place, with the 38-year-old leaving his role at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli.
Jaissle's first managerial job saw him take charge of Austrian second-tier outfit FC Liefering for just 17 games before being taken on by Red Bull Salzburg where he won back-to-back Bundesliga titles.
Jaissle then moved to Al-Ahli where he's won back-to-back AFC Champions League titles.
