Dalton Smith vs Alberto Puello Betting Odds: WBC champion favourite for Sheffield homecoming this weekend

Dalton Smith will hope to ensure a triumphant Sheffield homecoming on Saturday night when he makes the maiden defence of his prized WBC super-lightweight world title against Alberto Puello.

The Yorkshireman produced a career-best performance to dethrone former 140lbs ruler Subriel Matias in New York earlier this year, a victory that promoter Eddie Hearn described as one of the greatest away victories by a British boxer in boxing history.

Now, whilst Smith heads into his first defence as the narrow 1/2 favourite, many feel he is facing an even tougher assignment than the one he undertook across the pond.

The experienced Dominican Republic star has been beaten just once across his glittering fighting career; a controversial majority decision defeat at the hands of Smith's recent foe, Matias.

Despite many feeling Puello had done enough to get the verdict on the cards, he was ultimately relinquished of his WBC belt after two of the three judges scored the bout 115-113 in Matias' favour, and the other seeing it as a 114-114 draw.

The defeat brought an end to 24 successive victories for the Latin American, who first beat Gary Antuanne Russell to become the WBC's 'interim' champion in 2024 before overcoming Sandor Martin 12 months later to get his hands on the full title.

Whilst he will now attempt to establish himself as a two-time super-lightweight champion, he will be wary of an opponent who will be riding into the contest in career-best form.

The manner of Smith's stoppage victory over Matias in the Big Apple was sensational, dropping and stopping the American in just the fifth round to defy both the critics and odds.

In betting terms, he may be the narrow favourite to follow up that success with a 20th pro victory this coming weekend, but there are many who feel that it's the 6/4 outsider who possesses the majority of the betting value.
