Born out of the promotion's initial iteration as a violent spectacle with few rules, the UFC heavyweight division holds the unique distinction in combat sports of crowning the baddest man on the planet.
The inaugural UFC heavyweight title fight came during an era where wearing gloves was still not mandatory, and sustained legislative efforts were underway to try and kill the sport in its infancy.
In 1997, Mark Coleman defeated Dan Severn at UFC 12 to become the first man to claim the title, and the belt has remained the crowning achievement of the promotion's glamour division ever since.
Tom Aspinall was promoted to UFC undisputed heavyweight champion in June 2025 after Jon Jones relinquished the belt when he announced his retirement from the sport.
After making his debut in 2014, Aspinall was immediately earmarked as an MMA star for the future as he produced multiple dominant performances on the British regional scene.
Growing frustrated with the sport after finding it nearly impossible to find opponents, Aspinall was on the verge of stepping away from MMA entirely before signing with the UFC in 2020.
Since then BJJ black belt has been utterly dominant, with his only defeat inside the Octagon to date coming when he suffered a knee injury against Curtis Blaydes in 2022.
After being promoted from interim champion to undisputed champion, Aspinall was booked to face Ciryl Gane at UFC 321, but the fight was stopped in the first round after the Englishman suffered a double eye poke, with the bout declared a no contest.
With Aspinall unavailable through injury, Gane faced Alex Pereira for an interim title in the UFC Freedom 250 event in June, defeating the Brazilian to set up a highly-anticipated rematch between the pair.
