Coventry City 'in advanced talks to sign Aston Villa midfielder'

According to recent reports, Coventry City are in advanced talks to sign veteran Aston Villa midfielder Ross Barkley.

Barkley joined Aston Villa from Luton Town in 2024, following an exceptional season for the Hatters, despite their immediate relegation from the Premier League.

In Barkley's sole season at Kenilworth Road, the former Everton man reinvented himself in a more deep-lying role, a move which has completely shifted his career trajectory.

When he joined Luton, Barkley was seen as yet another English attacking midfielder who failed to live up to his early hype, spending a season out in France with Nice after departing Chelsea.

However, his eye catching performances and ability to control the tempo of football matches attracted the interest of Villa manager Unai Emery, who reportedly specifically requested the signing of Barkley.

Unfortunately for the 32 year-old, injuries have largely prevented him from securing a regular spot at Aston Villa, spending most of his career in the West Midlands as a substitute so far.

This has led to long-standing reports of a potential exit and, according to journalist Sam Cohen, Coventry City are advancing in talks to secure his services for next season.

Barkley is entering the final year of his contract with the Villans and, despite the club reportedly being in talks with him over a new contract according to the Athletic's Jacob Tanswell, the 32-year-old could be in line for a transfer this summer.

A move back to a newly promoted club could be exactly what Barkley requires at this stage of his career, as he looks to recapture the form from his time at Luton.

After the reported ACL injury to Amadou Onana in Belgium's World Cup Round of 16 demolition of USA , it remains to be seen whether or not Aston Villa would be interested in allowing one of their experienced midfield players to leave.

However, with Villa in the midst of financial difficulties after breaching UEFA's Squad Cost Rule - reasonable offers are likely to be entertained for almost all of the Emery's squad this summer.
