Coventry secured their first home win of the Premier League season with an impressive display against Newcastle.
Frank Lampard's side endured a difficult start to life back in the top flight after winning the Championship last season, but appeared to have turned a corner prior to the international break.
Four defeats without even getting on the scoresheet had sparked fears that the Sky Blues' long-awaited return to the Premier League could have been over before it even began.
However a 1-0 win away at Nottingham Forest last month provided some much-needed confidence and Coventry played like a team riding a wave of momentum as they welcomed Newcastle to the CBS Arena.
Coventry hadn't beaten Newcastle in the Premier League since 1999 but any fears that the unwanted streak would continue were quickly alleviated when Jack Rudoni netted from 12 yards early in the first half.
The referee pointed to the spot for a seemingly soft foul committed by the Newcastle goalkeeper and Rudoni capitalised on his opportunity, giving the hosts the lead after just six minutes in the West Midlands.
Newcastle spurned a number of opportunities to get back on level terms prior to the interval but the hosts remained resolute defensively and had their share of the ball leading into half time.
One of the two changes made by Lampard from the win at the City Ground saw teenager Sidiki Cherif handed his first Premier League start.
The move proved to be a masterstroke by Lampard early in the second half, as the Guinean fired home a stunning strike on the edge of the box to double his side's advantage.
The visitors continued to try and force their way back into the game however and they were rewarded for their persistence when Sven Botman was given the space to unleash a strike from the edge of the box, beating Carl Rushworth to halve the deficit.
Any hopes that the travelling fans may have had of Botman's goal inspiring a late comeback were quickly dashed as substitute Ellis Simms restored Coventry's two-goal advantage with his first touch after being introduced.
Another substitute completed the rout in the closing stages as Stephen Mfuni became the fourth Coventry player to get on the scoresheet.
