While strikers have dominated the award since it was first launched, the maiden ceremony saw central defender Phil Jagielka named Player of the Season following an outstanding 2005/06 campaign with Sheffield United.

Ryan Sessegnon is the only other defender to receive the prestigious accolade, while midfielders in the shape of Jason Koumas, Kevin Nolan, Adel Taarabt and Emiliano Buendia have bucked the striker trend over the previous two decades.
