When is the Champion Chase 2024? Cheltenham date, how to watch, start time, runners and odds

With back-to-back winner Energumene ruled out through injury, we're set to have a repeat of last year's Arkle Chase battle between El Fabiolo and Jonbon in this year's Champion Chase.

It was El Fabiolo who triumphed in the 2023 Arkle as he defeated Jonbon by five and a half lengths, and Wille Mullins' superstar is favourite to repeat the feat in the feature race on Day Two at the Cheltenham Festival.

Champion Chase

We were unfortunately denied a renewal of the rivalry and a pre-Festival appetiser when the Clarence House Chase was moved from Ascot to Cheltenham due to bad weather.

Jonbon narrowly lost out to surprise winner Elixir De Nutz in the rescheduled race, while El Fabiolo instead went to Leopardstown for the Dublin Chase the following week, which he won in impressive fashion.

It was El Fabiolo's second outing of the season after taking the honours in the Hilly Way Chase at Cork before Christmas, while Nicky Henderson will be hopeful that Jonbon's recent loss is just a blip after winning the Shloer Chase and the Tingle Creek before the turn of the year.

Edwardstone returned to form with a supreme jumping display at Newbury but his inconsistencies and a general lack of top two-mile chasers makes it hard to oppose another intriguing battle between El Fabiolo and Jonbon.

What is the Champion Chase?

The Champion Chase is the leading minimum-distance chase in British racing.

The Grade 1 race is open to horses aged five years or older and is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham.

There are 13 fences to be navigated over the two-mile race which is the headline event on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival.

Which horse has won the Champion Chase the most times?

There have been a number of horses who have won the Champion Chase on two occasions including Fortria, Drinny's Double, Royal Relief, Skymas, Hilly Way, Pearlyman, Barnbrook Again, Viking Flagship, Moscow Flyer, Master Minded, Sprinter Sacre, Altior and Energumene.

However, only one horse has won the race on three occasions. Badsworth Boy was a three-time winner of the race in consecutive years from 1983 to 1985.
