Scottish champions Celtic are reportedly set to make a move for Southampton's Japanese international Yukinari Sugawara before the closure of the transfer window.
According to transfer guru Pete O'Rourke, the Bhoys have made the 26-year-old one of their late priorities following the news that full-back Alistair Johnston has been ruled out of action until October with a hamstring injury.
Sugawara cemented himself as a mainstay in the Southampton side immediately after his switch from AZ Alkmaar two years ago, but has made just three appearances for the south coast club following their relegation.
He spent last season out on loan in the Bundesliga, making 31 appearances for Werder Bremen and has since been linked with a number of other clubs in the German top-flight.
However, a move away from St Mary's has so far failed to materialise, seemingly leaving Celtic in pole position to secure his signature with just a week of the summer window remaining.
Boss Martin O'Neill recently admitted that his defensive options were light and that he would explore opportunities to enhance his options.
Youngster Colby Donovan has deputised for Johnston since he picked up his injury, but at just 19, O'Neill is keen to ensure he doesn't place too big a burden on the rookie full-back.
It's been reported that Celtic would be more willing to sign Sugawara on a loan deal as opposed to a permanent agreement, although the Saints may wish to cash in on the player rather than sanctioning a second temporary move.
The Scottish giants have enjoyed a hugely productive start to the new season, winning each of their opening two league fixtures as well as overcoming Dundee United in the Scottish League Cup and seeing off LASK 3-0 in the first-leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off.
O'Neill will hope to secure a spot in UEFA's flagship European competition when they face the Austrian Bundesliga side in the second leg this evening.
