Burnley in talks to sign former Rangers winger on free transfer

Burnley have entered talks to sign Rabbi Matondo on a free transfer, according to reports.

Matondo, 25, is without a club after being released by Norwegian outfit SK Brann in July.

The Wales international was reportedly training with Sheffield United earlier in the summer, amid multiple links between Matondo and several Championship sides including Derby.

However, according to journalist Peter O'Rourke, Matondo is in talks with Burnley ahead of a proposed move to Turf Moor.

"Burnley are in talks to sign free agent Rabbi Matondo. The Wales international is a free agent after leaving SK Brann before the close of the the transfer window," O'Rourke wrote on X.

"Belgian duo Cercle Brugge and Zulte Waregem are also chasing Matondo."

Matondo will have fond memories of Cercle Brugge; enjoying the most producitve campaign of his career when on loan from German side Schalke.

He then enjoyed a mixed spell at Rangers after sealing a permanent move to the Scottish giants. Matondo featured heavily in his first two seasons in Glasgow but eventually fell out of favour and was shipped out to Hannover on loan.

Burnley are seeking reinforcements after failure to win any of their opening five Championship matches. Defeats to West Brom, Norwich and Bristol City leave them rock bottom of the table - a far cry from what was expected of them in preseason.

New boss Nicky Hayen has already dipped his toe into the free agent market in recent days, bringing in Jamie Vardy.

Zian Flemming's transfer to Ipswich leaves the Clarets short at the top of the pitch and they have turned to the veteran striker to help turn their season around. Vardy was last in action in Italy with Cromonese where his side suffered relegation to Serie B.

Luton and Leicester have suffered back-to-back relegations from the Premier League to League One in the last two years and Burnley will be desperate not to make it a hat-trick.

Despite their tough start, Burnley are 16/1 for relegation, but 8/1 to earn promotion.
