Not officially being standardised until 2006, Brazilian football spent years operating via state championships until the first national championship in 1971.
Over the years, Brazilian football frequently changed its competition system, not settling on a format until 2006, when 20 teams contested Serie A in a round robin format, with all 20 teams playing each other home and away; a format that still exists today.
While different tournaments were used to establish Brazilian champions, there have been 10 different champions since 2001: Atletico Paranaense, Atletico Mineiro, Cruzeiro, Flamengo, Fluminense, Corinthians, Palmeiras, Santos, Sao Paulo and Botafogo.
