Ben Whittaker v Conor Wallace Prediction and Tips

Ben Whittaker can take a significant step towards a first world title fight on Saturday night if he can overcome Conor Wallace in a final eliminator for the IBF heavyweight title.

The winner will become the mandatory challenger for the belt that is currently held by Dmitry Bivol, who also holds the WBA and WBO titles.

Ben Whittaker v Conor Wallace Tips Preview

Whittaker won the silver medal at the Olympics in 2020 before making the move into the paid ranks and quickly established himself as one of Britain's rising stars.

His unorthodox and flamboyant fighting style made him stand out from the crowd, but he is yet to be truly tested at the highest level despite putting together a 12-0-1 record.

That will all change on Saturday night as he faces the 17-1 Wallace, a Northern Irish fighter who has made his name in Australia.

Wallace is ranked at No. 2 by the IBF, one spot above Whittaker, and is a tough southpaw who has both height and reach advantages in his favour.

Like Whittaker, Wallace has a strong amateur background as he competed at a high level in his homeland before making the move Down Under in 2018.

He has spent his entire professional career in Australia and Saturday's fight will be his first on UK soil and just his second outside of Queensland.

Whittaker appeared unstoppable in the early stages of his career with a succession of dominant wins.

The Surgeon put together an 8-0 record before suffering a first setback in a technical draw with Liam Cameron, as their fight ended early in bizarre circumstances as both fighters fell out of the ring.

Whittaker had already become a polarising figure within British boxing due to perceived arrogance, both in and out of the ring.

His detractors suggested he had been looking for a way out against Cameron after struggling to impose himself on the fight, but he fired back at his critics in empathic fashion in the immediate rematch, with a stunning second-round stoppage.

That win marked the start of an incredible four-fight run for Whittaker ahead of this meeting with Wallace. The 29-year-old has won all of his last four fights inside the first two rounds, becoming the first man to stop Richard Rivera in his last bout in New York.

Wallace has also had to fight back from adversity as he lost on points to Leti Leti in 2021, but responded with a sixth-round stoppage success when the pair met again the following year.

Wallace is on a ten-fight winning streak and has won six of his last eight bouts inside the distance.

Saturday's bout represents a step up in class for both fighters and there is plenty at stake, as whoever wins will be in line for a chance to challenge for a world title and the loser will have to contemplate a rebuild.

Ben Whittaker v Conor Wallace Top Tips

  • Ben Whittaker to win in rounds 1-6 @ 13/10

  • Ben Whittaker to win in round 3 @ 10/1

Whittaker has become a more focused fighter since his draw with Cameron and he's made light work of his last four opponents, including Cameron in a rematch.

In-form Wallace is a significant step up in class for the Briton and the fact he is a southpaw adds a further element of intrigue.

Whittaker lost the Olympic final to Cuban southpaw Arlen Lopez and hasn't faced anyone who fights in that stance since moving into the paid ranks, but that may be the only puzzle Wallace provides.

In contrast, The Surgeon is a bit of an enigma himself with his fluid movement and ability to create angles.

Wallace likes to use his jab and fight on the front foot, the Australia-based Northern Irishman likes to close the ring down and trap his opponents before unloading his combinations - but pinning Whittaker down could be too big of an ask.

Whittaker's movement, speed and accuracy could be the key factors and he clearly carries enough power to bring an early end to proceedings.

The Surgeon blew Richard Rivera away in his last bout inside the first two rounds and Rivera had never been stopped previously in a 29-fight career.

Whittaker should be able to get the job done in the first half of the fight and a small play on the third round as a bit of an outside bet is also of interest.

Wallace's size and jab should keep him out of danger in the very early stages, but Whittaker has the speed and skills to send out a message to the rest of the division and the third round could be where he gets his win over the line.
