Blackburn Rovers rival Premier League sides for talented French youngster who is available for transfer next summer

Blackburn Rovers have been linked with a surprise swoop for highly-regarded French youngster William Mirwasser as Tony Mowbray bids to strengthen his ranks in January.

The 17-year-old has risen to prominence after starring for Hong Kong FC over the past 12 months, cementing himself as a key starter for the Asian club as part of their backline.

Mirwasser came through the Hong Kong youth ranks after joining from FC Issy in his homeland three years ago and has since made 19 senior appearances for the club.

However, despite that, reputable French sports outlet L'Equipe are reporting the player is keen on securing a move back to Europe next summer.

FIFA regulations stipulate than any player aged 17 or younger must remain with their Hong Kong Premier League sides until they turn 18, meaning Mirwasser won't be able to complete a switch until the end of the current English season.

That hasn't deterred clubs from signalling their interest in a potential deal though, with Championship side Blackburn Rovers, along with Everton, having recently invited the player over to view their facilities as they ponder a future move.

L'Equipe have quoted a source close to the player as saying: "The idea behind these trips is to visit the training centres of these clubs, but also to discuss the player’s future.

"Nothing has been decided yet on this matter, so we want to take the time to explore all the possibilities available to him before he commits to a new club next summer."

Mirwasser can play anywhere across the backline although has impressed as an attacking right back; a position Blackburn boss Mowbray is keen to strengthen.

However, with the player also set to visit a number of other clubs next month, including French side RC Strasbourg and Italian outfit US Lecce, it remains to be seen as to whether the lure of Championship football will appeal to the in-demand youngster.
