bet365 punters backing Bruno Fernandes to win PFA Player of the Year

Bruno Fernandes continued his sparkling form for Manchester United on Monday night, laying on another assist in the 2-1 win over Brentford.

The Red Devils skipper led the way with five key passes at Old Trafford -- as many as the rest of his team mates managed between them -- and with him now just two assists away from breaking the Premier League record of 20, the Portuguese appears to also be closing in on the PFA Player of the Year award.

bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “Another game and another assist from Bruno Fernandes, who has thrived playing further forward since the arrival of Michael Carrick.

“When Carrick arrived, Declan Rice was odds-on and dominating the PFA betting market with Bruno out at 100/1.

“Our customers have clearly seen the change under Carrick because a whopping 77% of stakes since mid-January have been on Bruno with his PFA odds tumbling from 100/1 into Evens.

"And with that has come a six-figure liability."

Fernandes is now into 4/7 to surpass the record tally of 20 assists, with his tally now at 19 after teeing up Benjamin Sesko against Brentford.

The 31-year-old would have been remembered as a modern-day great at Old Trafford even had he departed last summer, but he's taken his game to new levels this term.

While Fernandes leads the Premier League with 19 assists, he's also miles clear in terms of big chances created, with 28 being 10 better than Rayan Cherki, and his ridiculous tally of 114 chances created being 53 better than next best Declan Rice and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Despite their post-Sir Alex Ferguson malaise, Manchester United still boast the most PFA Player of the Year winners with 11, one more than Liverpool and six more than Tottenham and Arsenal, though their last winner was Wayne Rooney back in 2010.

Rooney was the club's eighth winner in the Premier League era after Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Teddy Sheringham, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Cristiano Ronaldo (twice) and Ryan Giggs. Prior to the Premier League's inception, Mark Hughes won two PFA awards in 1989 and 1991 before Gary Pallister won in 1992.
