Ben Whittaker could be just two fights away from a world title shot following a recent WBC ruling.
The 2020 Olympic silver medallist made his debut under the Matchroom promotional banner on Saturday night, dominating an overmatched Benjamin Gavazi en route to a first-round stoppage.
Throughout his burgeoning career Whittaker has looked largely dominant - outside of his closely contested first encounter with Liam Cameron - and his flashy style has garnered a huge following on social media, making him one of the most popular stars in the sport despite his relative inexperience.
Questions still remain on how the 28-year-old will fare against some of the best talents the 175lb division has to offer, though it appears Whittaker will soon get an opportunity to answer his critics.
The World Boxing Council announced during their annual convention this week that they have ordered a bout between Whittaker and former interim world champion Joshua Buatsi.
The slated clash would serve as a final eliminator for a shot at current unified light heavyweight champion David Benavidez.
Buatsi holds a professional record of 19 wins and one loss, with the only blemish coming against former world champion Callum Smith in in February.
