The first edition of EuroBasket took place in Switzerland in 1935, three years after the establishment of the FIBA organisation, and consisted of 10 teams, with Latvia taking the inaugural title.
Lithuania claimed back-to-back titles in the second and third editions of the tournament before the 1941 event was cancelled due to World War II.
The competition returned in 1946 and Czechoslovakia triumphed before an extended period of dominance for the former Soviet Union, as they claimed 11 wins in 13 tournaments in a run spanning from 1947 to 1971. Egypt competed in the competition from 1937 to 1953 and they claimed one title during that spell, with Hungary the other team to win the tournament during the Soviet stranglehold on EuroBasket.
Yugoslavia emerged as a power in 1973 and they defended the title in 1975 and 1977, while in recent years Spain have been the dominant force, winning all four of their titles in the last six editions of the tournament.
EuroBasket switched to using four countries as host nations in 2015 and since then games have been played in France, Croatia, Germany (twice), Finland, Latvia, Israel, Finland, Romania, Turkey, Czech Republic, Georgia and Italy.
EuroBasket 2025 will be the first time Cyprus and Poland have hosted games in the tournament proper.
