Alex Pereira is on the verge of history as he prepares to take on Ciryl Gane for the interim UFC heavyweight title at the White House on Sunday night.
Ciryl Gane By Decision or Technical Decision - 14/5
The Brazilian has been a revelation inside the Octagon since making the move to MMA following a distinguished career in kickboxing.
After defeating Israel Adesanya to claim the UFC's middleweight belt, Pereira continued his run of dominance at 205lbs, joining an elite group of two-weight world champions inside the promotion.
Now the 38-year-old will attempt to do what no man before him has done inside the UFC by winning gold in a third weight class as he moves up to heavyweight.
Standing across the cage from him on Sunday night will be former interim champion Ciryl Gane.
Gane has unsuccessfully challenged for an undisputed title on three occasions, losing to Francis Ngannou in 2022 and Jon Jones the following year before his clash with Tom Aspinall ended in a no contest in October after an inadvertent eye poke from the Frenchman rendered the champion unable to continue.
With Aspinall still unable to compete, Gane will get a fourth bite of the cherry this weekend, and MMA expert Adam Catterall insisted he has what it takes to pull off an upset on the South Lawn of the White House.
"I think stylistically this doesn’t work for Alex Pereira," Catterall said on bet365 Cageside.
"Ciryl Gane’s footwork is exquisite, navigating that Octagon, staying out of the way, getting in and getting out incredibly quickly are his forte and I think he’s going to do exactly that here in this fight.
"He’s going to be forced to fight in certain occasions but I think Ciryl Gane is good enough.
"I think he’ll stay out of the way of Alex Pereira’s dominant shots, I think he’ll stay out of the way of the setups, and I think he will navigate a 25-minute points decision.
"So I’m going to go, the new interim champion of the world, Ciryl Gane."
