Notable Speech defends his Breeders' Cup Mile crown at Keeneland on Saturday.

Godolphin, Charlie Appleby and William Buick have a fabulous record in this contest, combining to land four of the last five runnings.

The boys in blue have so far saddled Space Blues (2021), Modern Games (2022), Master Of The Seas (2023) and Notable Speech (2025) to success; trailing only the Niarchos family, who have owned six Mile winners.

This race has a rich history of repeat winners: no less than six horses have won the Mile in consecutive years, the last being Goldikova who completed an unprecedented hat-trick in 2010.

Given his run style, you're always a little hostage to fortune with Notable Speech, however, as he proved at Del Mar last year, the turn of foot that he possesses is good enough to get him out of most situations. The five-year-old has seven Group 1s to his name and he could bow out on eight if all falls well this weekend.

Close up behind him last time out was Deterministic, and he is back for another crack at his rival. Miguel Clement's stable star has been mopping up domestic top-level events around the mile, eventually bumping into Notable Speech at Woodbine. Expect him to be right on the pace and, if the gaps don't fall right for the jolly, he will be tough to peg back.

Lake Forest is another that will need gaps to appear at the right time, very much suited by a patient approach from the saddle. Cieren Fallon has ridden him all season long and appears to get along with him well, partnering him to victory at both Haydock and Goodwood this season. His draw in two means that he may see more traffic than ideal up the rail.

It wouldn't be like Aidan O'Brien to go empty handed in the Mile and he hasn't disappointed, sending True Love and Puerto Rico over for the £1.4m prize.

The former is a Classic winner courtesy of her success in the 1000 Guineas at the beginning of the campaign, but failed to really kick on through the remainder of the summer. That was until she lunged late on in the Prix de la Foret, nabbing Nighttime on the line and setting her up perfectly for a trip Stateside.
