The PGA Tour heads to the Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal at Diamante in Los Cabos, Mexico this week for the World Wide Technology Championship, and resident golf expert Jason Sobel has his tips and predictions.
It’s the first time a Tiger Woods-designed course will host a PGA Tour event, as the field comes down to Baja California Sur to take on the 7,452-yard, par-72 elevated oceanside course.
Ryder Cup winner Ludvig Aberg (+900 to win outright) and Cameron Young (+1100) are the top-two favorites to win at El Cardonal, but Jason likes Davis Thompson (+4500) and Sam Ryder (+8000) as his outright plays.
Thompson has had a strong showing in the FedEx Cup Fall events, posting six top-35 finishes in his last seven starts including a t-16 finish at the Sanderson Farms Championship in early October. His best finish in 2023 came at The American Express in January, where he was runner-up to Jon Rahm.
Ryder has never won on the PGA TOUR, although he’s got 11 top-10s and a runner-up over the past three seasons. The 33-year-old is one of the best putters on tour and ranks 3rd in total putting and 12th in strokes gained with his putter this season, per the PGA Tour’s official website.
For a top-10 finish, Jason likes J.J. Spaun (+300 Top 10 Finish) to excel at El Cardonal this week. The 33-year-old is coming off a t-6 finish at the ZOZO Championship and has been red-hot with his irons over the last six months. If Spaun can maintain his current form, he’s got every chance to be near the top of the leaderboard at the WWT.
