One of the most anticipated stops on the PGA TOUR calendar, THE PLAYERS Championship is back this week with a stacked field headed to TPC Sawgrass.
Not only is THE PLAYERS a benchmark event for fans, who get to enjoy the blissful scenery of TPC Sawgrass and Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, but it’s a must-attend for every golfer on tour.
It’s got the biggest purse ($25 million) of the PGA TOUR season, with the tournament champion taking home $4.5 million. Outside of the majors and international play, THE PLAYERS is as high-stakes as it gets.
Our resident golf expert Jason Sobel has his outright pick set for the tournament.
For my money, this is most difficult tourney for the entire year to prognosticate.
We’ve seen long hitters, short hitters, great iron players, good putters, superstars, journeymen, veterans, rookies … what are we going to see this week?
Well, it might just boil down to the guy who won this last year, and the guy who won last week, who just so happens to be the No. 1 player in the world in Scottie Scheffler, who has a really short number (+550).
I get it, we’re trying to beat Scottie this week. We’re not going too much further down the board with our favorite outright selection this week. It’s a guy who was close for a while last weekend at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Will Zalatoris is playing some really good golf right now. We’re looking for ball strikers, we’re looking for good second shot players. He’s got a couple of top-5s already this year, and Zalatoris is a guy that tends to play his best golf in the big tournaments.
