The final event of the 2022/23 PGA Tour season and inaugural FedEx Cup Fall has arrived, and it’s make-or-break time for many of the players participating. The RSM Classic is the last chance for golfers to secure their PGA Tour card for the 2024 season, with only the top 125 in the FedEx Cup Fall standings securing a membership. 

Resident golf expert Jason Sobel has his tips and predictions for the tournament, including two outright plays and a top-10 selection. 

The RSM Classic will be played across two different courses at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia – Plantation (7,060 yards, par-72) and Seaside (7,005 yards, par-70) – on Thursday and Friday, before moving to just the Seaside course for the weekend. 

Ryder Cup winner Ludvig Aberg (+1100 to win outright) is the favorite to win the event and secure his first career PGA Tour victory, with Champion Golfer of the Year Brian Harman (+2000) and Cameron Young (+2200) close behind in the betting. 

J.T. Poston (+2800) is a name to follow this week, as the 30-year-old comes down to Georgia off the back of seven top-25 finishes in his last eight starts, five of which were top-10. Poston is a two-time winner on tour, most recently at the 2022 John Deere Classic.

Alex Smalley (+5500) is another one to consider in the outright market. The American has four top-10s in 2022/23 and came fifth at the RSM Classic a year ago. The 27-year-old is still eyeing his first PGA Tour win.

This week’s field features some bigger names than in recent FedEx Cup Fall events, including Corey Conners, who Jason likes for a top-10 finish at +300. The Canadian hasn’t competed since the TOUR Championship in August, so he may not be in his peak form at Sea Island this week, although his ball-striking ability exceeds that of most every player in the field.

Conners is currently the world No. 33 and is expected to compete for some of the bigger PGA Tour events and majors in 2024.
