Never Ordinary Moments with Commanders OL Sam Cosmi

At bet365, we don’t do ordinary.

And neither does Washington Commanders right guard Sam Cosmi.

In his third NFL season since being selected by Washington in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Cosmi has overcome injuries and a position change to become a bonafide starter on the Commanders’ offensive line.

The Humble, Texas native earned a reputation as one of the most athletic right tackles in the nation during his time at the University of Texas, something that put him on the radar of NFL scouts.

As a rookie in Washington, Cosmi was first on the depth chart at right tackle before an ankle injury and thumb injury forced him to miss eight games. In 2022, Cosmi had thumb surgery four weeks into the season, this time losing his starting spot. By the time he recovered, Cornelius Lucas was the starting right tackle, and Cosmi was the back-up.

In the offseason leading up to 2023, instead of accepting his fate as a second-string, Cosmi took matters into his own hands. He learned how to play guard, a totally different style than what he was accustomed to at tackle. He adapted so quickly that he became Washington’s 2023 Week 1 starter at right guard.

“Whatever position I’m playing, right now I’m playing guard. I want to be the best guard in the league” Cosmi said.

The 24-year-old has since started all 15 games for the Commanders in 2023, and hasn’t missed an offensive snap since Week 2.

What makes Sam Cosmi ‘Never Ordinary’?

“My ability to just go out there and be a dog. At the end of the day, have fun with the game,” Cosmi said. And still treat the game as a game. Being able to have that ability to let it loose.”

Cosmi has earned a reputation for not only being an athletic freak, but a hard-nosed, smart, resilient player. At the same time, the 6-foot-6, 315-pounder knows football is about having fun.

This was evident when a clip of Cosmi hitting the ‘griddy’ went viral during the Commanders’ 2023 preseason win against the Baltimore Ravens.

A dance usually reserved for wide receivers after scoring touchdowns, social media greatly enjoyed seeing an offensive lineman do his version of the move. The NFL even tweeted the clip of Cosmi dancing, captioned “Sam Cosmi hitting the griddy amongst the chaos” with a laughing face emoji.

“There was so much commotion going on, and this that and the other, flags being thrown, just chaos,” Cosmi said. “I was just like, ‘I’m going to hit the griddy.’”

We haven’t seen any dance moves from Cosmi during the 2023 regular season - the third-year pro has been all business. It’s only his first year as a full-time guard rather than tackle, and Cosmi has ambitions to reach the very top.

“I don’t want to be an average joe. I want to be one of the best,” Cosmi said.
