The Philadelphia Phillies have won 36 of their first 50 games in the 2024 MLB season, and they are the new second favorites to win the World Series.
The Phillies entered the season at +1100 to win the World Series but they are now +475.
Big improvements this season from starting pitcher Ranger Suarez and third baseman Alec Bohm have helped drive the Phils' success, as have the six batters including Bohm who have OPS stats above .800.
On the mound, the Phillies rank in the top five league-wide in runs allowed per game (3.64, fifth-best), team ERA (3.17, third-best), home runs allowed (41, joint-third-best) and strikeouts (466, best in MLB).
In addition to Suarez's improvement, starting pitchers Aaron Nola and Zach Wheeler have lived up to the contract extensions each signed in the offseason. Orion Kerkering, Jose Alvarado, Matt Strahm, Spencer Turnbull and Jeff Hoffman have been effective out of the bullpen with all having WHIP stats under 1.1.
Suarez leads all MLB pitchers in wins (9), WHIP (0.788) and in the advanced stat weighted on-base average (.220), which indicates how often - and how well - players get on base. Plus, he's eighth in MLB in WAR at 2.8.
After 50 games, Bohm ranks in the top-10 league-wide in offensive WAR (2.3, ninth), batting average (.330, eighth), hits (61, tied for sixth) and doubles (20, first). Bryce Harper is tied for seventh in home runs (12) and RBI (37) while Kyle Schwarber is fifth in runs scored with 38.
Most recently, the Phillies won the first two games of a three-game series against the defending champion Texas Rangers to clinch the series win. They have also swept the San Francisco Giants and the San Diego Padres in late April and early May.
Only two of the teams the Phillies have played have records of .500 or better, meaning the season will get a lot more difficult. That said, shortstop Trea Turner has played in just 33 of the team's first 50 games due to a hamstring injury, but he has ramped up his rehab and should return in the coming weeks.
They end May with winnable series against the Colorado Rockies and Giants, but they face the Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles in June.
The Phillies also have three series against their NL East rival Atlanta Braves and two series against the World Series favorite Los Angeles Dodgers still to come this season.
