Washington Mystics vs. Indiana Fever: Picks, Predictions and Odds

The Indiana Fever are quickly remembering what life is like without second-year phenom Caitlin Clark, who is out for several games after suffering a left quadriceps strain.

The Fever, who have lost four of their last five games and two straight without Clark, host the Washington Mystics on Monday at 7 PM ET. The Mystics have also lost 4-of-5 after starting the season with two wins. However, at 3-4, the team is well ahead of last year’s 0-12 start.

Following that 14-26 campaign, the Mystics made wholesale changes, bringing in new coach Sydney Johnson and trading away leading scorer Ariel Atkins. Brittney Sykes is the team’s new leader, and she has been bolstered by two rookies early on.

Guard Sonia Citron and forward Kiki Iriafen, touted All-conference selections out of Notre Dame and USC respectively, have brought a youthful vigor to a team that is seeing several of its veterans, including Stefanie Dolson and Shakira Austin, struggle to date.

Washington was flattened by the defending WNBA champion New York Liberty Friday night, 85-63. Sykes, a ninth-year guard out of Syracuse, had a team-high 20 points.

With Clark, the Fever started 2-2, with losses to the 5-2 Atlanta Dream and the Liberty by a combined three points. Indiana had New York on the ropes before succumbing at the very end, losing by a 90-88 final score.

Without Clark, the Fever lost 83-77 at Washington five days ago before falling 85-83 at home to lowly Connecticut, giving the Sun their first win of the season.

The Fever and Mystics meet again on Monday, where Indiana will look to even the season series.

Washington Mystics vs. Indiana Fever betting picks and predictions

Washington Mystics +4.0 (-110)

With Clark in the lineup and two rookies playing such prominent roles for the Mystics early on, this pick typically wouldn't require as much thought. But, in Clark’s absence, the Fever can lose just about any matchup, as Friday night’s defeat to the now 1-6 Sun showed.

The Mystics’ strong start was undermined by a three-game West Coast road trip to face Golden State, Las Vegas, and Phoenix, which all resulted in losses. But Washington was competitive in all of them, losing by an average of less than four points a game. Only the blowout loss to the Liberty on Friday stands out.

The key matchup will be Iriafen inside against Boston. Can the rookie stay with Boston again? Last week against Indy, Sykes led the team with 21 points and nine rebounds, but Iriafen was fairly clutch herself, adding 16 points and eight rebounds.

Citron was clutch as well, getting 13 points and grabbing seven rebounds while Boston was held to 10 points and seven rebounds.

Sykes leads the team in scoring, with 21.7 points per game, to go along with a team-high 4.5 assists. Citron, the third pick in this year’s WNBA Draft, is averaging 14.3 points. Iriafen, who was drafted right after Citron, is averaging 13.9 points and is fourth in the league with 10.1 rebounds.

Washington's key players are rolling early in the 2025 WNBA season, so back them to at least keep it close and cover the +4.0 spread as road underdogs.

Under 161.5 total points (-110)

Washington is not scoring at a great clip, averaging 76.9 points a game, which is only better than expansion Golden State and the Sun. But they are also holding opponents to 79.4 points a game, fourth best in the league.

The team surpassed 161.5 points in its first two contests, but in their last five matches, the Mystics and their opponents are only averaging a combined 147 total points.

Indiana is third in scoring offense (85.3 ppg) and sixth in scoring defense (80.5) and the Fever combined to score 168 points with the Sun Friday. But the team will lack consistency offensively as long as Clark is sidelined. As a result, back the Under.

Brittney Sykes Over 20.5 points (-110)

It’s only been five games, but Sykes’ 21.7 points per game average is by far the best of her career, and is fourth in the WNBA right now.

More importantly, Sykes is displaying the offensive consistency new Mystics coach Johnson will need from her throughout the season, with Washington relying heavily on two rookies.

Sykes has scored 20 or more points in five of the six games she’s played this season. Look for that streak to improve to 6-of-7.
