Two of the WNBA’s best teams to start the 2025 season meet up on Tuesday night, when the 4-0 Minnesota Lynx host the 3-1 Seattle Storm at the Target Center at 8 PM ET.
The four-time champion Lynx took the New York Liberty to five games in last year’s WNBA Finals before succumbing, and the team seems hell-bent on returning. They have won their first four contests, albeit against teams with a combined 2-11 record, by an average of nearly 10 points per contest.
Napheesa Collier, who finished second in MVP voting last season before winning the inaugural award in this winter’s Unrivaled 3v3 league, is tearing up the league.
The four-time All-Star leads the WNBA with 29.5 points per game, and is adding 7.3 rebounds. She has already tallied 28 or more points three times, and the Lynx go as she goes.
Minnesota’s Cheryl Reeve is by far the longest-tenured coach in the league. Now in her 16th season, she oversaw the Lynx’s four championship campaigns and has taken the franchise to the postseason 13 times in 15 years. The Lynx went 30-10 last year, including 16-4 at home, where they have won their first two matchups this season.
Her counterpart, fourth-year Seattle Storm coach Noelle Quinn, led a sterling response to a dismal 11-29 campaign in 2023. The team finished 25-15 overall in 2024, including 11-9 on the road, before losing in the first round to the Las Vegas Aces.
Nneka Ogwumike had a sparkling Seattle debut last year after spending her previous 12 campaigns with the Los Angeles Sparks. The nine-time All-Star has followed that up by averaging 20.5 points, fifth-best in the WNBA, and 10.5 rebounds to lead the Storm, who have won three straight after an opening-night blowout loss at the Phoenix Mercury.
The Lynx took the West easily last season, taking three of four contests with the Storm in the process.
Despite Minnesota’s undefeated start, they have won just two games at home, against the winless Dallas Wings and Connecticut Sun, by a combined 10 points.
Seattle shook off that poor season-opening performance to win at Dallas before coming home to knock off that same Mercury squad by seven, before an impressive 102-82 victory over the Aces on Sunday.
Ogwumike had just 12 points in that opening-night loss, but has responded by averaging more than 23 points per game in each of the last three wins.
In addition to Ogwumike, Skylar Diggins-Smith is off to a strong start. The six-time All-Star also had an impressive debut with Seattle last season after missing the 2023 campaign on maternity leave.
She is averaging 19 points and is second in the league with 8.8 assists, while Gabby Williams is averaging 11 points and is tied for fourth with 2.2 steals a game.
Collier has been unstoppable for Minnesota, and Courtney Williams is fourth in the league with 7.2 assists to go with 12.8 points, but those close results at home the last few days against markedly inferior squads bode well for the Storm.
Seattle has only topped 157.5 total points once. Minnesota has only totaled less than 157.5 points once. Both occurrences came in each team’s last contest.
Both sides like to run and keep the pace moving. Minnesota is third in the league with 87.3 points a game. Seattle is seventh, scoring nearly 80 points per contest.
Both teams have strong defenses, with the Storm second in the league in points allowed with 76. Minnesota is not far behind, surrendering 77.5 points per game, good for fourth in the league.
Look for the two teams to combine for Over 157.5 points this evening.
While there are several attractive player prop options here, including Ogwumike at +105 to score more than 19.5 points, the pick has to go with the hottest hand.
Collier has scored more than 22.5 points each time out. Her season-low was 23 in an 89-75 victory over the Sparks, but she has gone for 33, 28, and 34 in her other three outings.
The Lynx won three out of four games against the Storm last season, with the only loss coming without Collier in the lineup. She averaged nearly 23 points in those three victories, so back her to hit that mark once again.
