Just three weeks into the 2025 WNBA season, the defending champion New York Liberty has again established itself as the firm favorite to win it all again this fall.
Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquel Jones and company are off to a 7-0 start and travel to Washington to take on the Mystics tonight at 7:30 PM ET.
Only the Minnesota Lynx, the defending Western Conference champions who are off to an 8-0 start, sit ahead of New York in the WNBA standings.
Stewart leads the team at 18.1 points per game, followed closely by Ionescu at 17.9 points a contest with nearly three made 3-pointers on average. Jones is averaging a double-double, going for 15.7 points and 11.3 rebounds, the latter of which ranks second in the league.
The Liberty are crushing teams, winning by an average of 20.6 points a game. They are first in the league in both scoring offense (91.9 ppg) and defense (71.3 ppg allowed) and have already recorded five double-digit victories.
That includes an 85-63 win over the Mystics in Washington last week. Ionescu had a game-high 28 points to lead New York, while Jones had 14 points and 18 rebounds and Leonie Fiebich contributed 12 points and nine rebounds. Stewart had a fairly quiet evening, chipping in with 10 points and seven assists.
Brittney Sykes had 20 points to lead Washington, which has lost 5-of-6 after winning their first two games of the season. The team is relying heavily on two rookies, USC’s Kiki Iriafen and Notre Dame’s Sonia Citron. Iriafen had 12 points and seven rebounds and Citron scored 10 points for Washington in the loss.
Sykes leads the team and is fourth in the league in scoring at 21.4 points per game. Iriafen, who had 20 points and nine rebounds in an 85-76 loss to the Indiana Fever Tuesday night, is averaging 14.6 points and is fourth in the league with 10 boards per game.
Let's break down tonight's rematch of last week's game with Liberty-Mystics picks and predictions.
It’s hard to picture anything but a repeat of last Friday’s result. New York is simply rolling right now and the Mystics are just too young and don’t have enough depth to hang with the defending champs for four quarters.
Washington squandered an opportunity to get back in the win column Tuesday against a Caitlin Clark-less Fever team.
With the team’s only consistent interior presence, Iriafen, having just eight professional games under her belt, Jones should be able to easily replicate her 14-point, 18-rebound line.
New York led by 10 after one quarter in D.C. last week and cruised the rest of the way, adding to its advantage in each period thereafter. The same thing should happen again tonight at CareFirst Arena.
Both teams have become a fairly safe bet to play to the Under the last few weeks. The Liberty totalled more than 163.5 points in each of its first three games, but has not done so since.
Washington, meanwhile, topped 163.5 points in its first two contests, but has totalled less than that in each of its last six contests.
This includes the 148 combined points scored in this same matchup last week. New York is scoring a lot, and giving up a lot less, and there is no reason to believe Washington will find a way to surpass the 63-point total it had against the Liberty last week.
The three-time All-Star started the season slowly, combining for 24 points in wins over the Las Vegas Aces and Chicago Sky to open the 2025 campaign.
Since then, she has gone for 18 or more points in four of the team’s last five games.
Ionescu made four 3-pointers and had a season-high 28 points against the Mystics last week.
The only potential knock on this pick is if New York jumps out to a massive, insurmountable lead early. It happened Sunday in a 100-52 triumph over the Connecticut Sun when she had 18 points in just 19 minutes of play.
