Last year's WNBA champion New York Liberty host the 2022 and 2023 champion Las Vegas Aces on Saturday afternoon at 1 PM ET to open the 2025 campaign.
New York, which went 32-8 last season, ended the Aces’ bid for a three-peat with a 3-1 playoff semifinal win before going on to win the franchise’s first title by defeating the Minnesota Lynx 3-2 in the Finals.
Las Vegas, 27-13 a year ago, returns three-time MVP A'ja Wilson, who led the league in scoring and blocks and finished in the top five in rebounds and steals.
She'll match up against two-time MVP Breanna Stewart, who finished fourth in the league in scoring last season.
In addition to the playoff series win, the Liberty swept the Aces in the regular season, winning all three contests by an average of eight points.
However, last season is now in the history books and below are our experts’ picks and predictions for what is each team's WNBA season-opening contest.
The Liberty finally got over the hump last season, winning its first championship in its sixth finals. Stewart and Co. dethroned the Aces along the way, taking 6-of-7 games overall against the two-time defending champs last season.
Historically, these two teams could not be more equal.
Both teams have 32 regular season wins and four postseason victories against the other. New York has won three straight and 5-of-6 at home at Barclays Center in Brooklyn against the Aces, dating back to the 2023 season.
The Liberty finished 16-4 at home last season, while Las Vegas went a respectable 14-6 on the road. It’s as good a matchup as you could ask for to open the 2025 season.
Our experts are looking for the Liberty to feed off the environment, as the team will receive its championship rings and raise the 2024 title banner before tip-off.
The Aces will be game as well, as they look to set the tone early in a redemption season on a quest to win their third title in four years.
On this night at least, our experts expect the Liberty to be a hair better and cover the 3.5-point spread as favorites.
These were the two highest-scoring teams last season. Las Vegas averaged 86.4 points and New York averaged 85.6 points, with a league-leading average point differential of +9.1. They both can fill the basket up all game.
Wilson led all league scorers with 26.9 points, with Jackie Young the second-leading returning scorer for the Aces at 15.8 points.
Stewart led New York with 20.4 points per game, followed by Sabrina Ionescu with 18.2 points and Jonquel Jones with 14.2 points.
However, even with all that firepower, the two teams only totaled more than 167.5 points three times in seven matchups a year ago and only once in three regular-season games.
It’s opening night, and the offense for both teams isn’t midseason crisp. Our experts don’t expect a low-scoring affair, but they do see the scoring being in the 145-160-point range in this opener.
As prolific as Wilson was all last season, she never met her season average when playing New York.
In six games, Wilson averaged 21.3 points against New York, with a season high of 24 twice, once in the regular season and once in the playoffs.
Wilson opened the 2024 season with a 30-point, 13-rebound effort against the Phoenix Mercury and she would love to replicate that performance.
However, although the Liberty won’t stop her by any means, our experts do expect them to contain her just enough to keep her Under that 25.5-point mark.
