The Indiana Fever and Minnesota Lynx match up for the first time this season Sunday night, with the hosting Lynx currently sitting atop the Western Conference at 16-7.
However, the Lynx got thumped in Seattle 91-63 on Friday night, a fourth loss in the last seven games, and clearly struggled against the Storm without leading scorer Napheesa Collier, who is out with a foot injury.
Indiana has stabilized after a 1-8 start and, at 10-14, have realistic playoff expectations.
Rookie phenom Caitlin Clark continues to dazzle, leading the Fever in assists and steals while also averaging 16.8 points. Kelsey Mitchell now leads Indiana in scoring at 16.9 points a game after a 28-point outing in the Fever’s 95-86 victory over Phoenix on Friday night.
The Lynx had won two straight without Collier, but simply ran out of gas against Seattle.
Those troubles could extend into Sunday's contest with the Fever, despite Minnesota’s sterling 10-2 record at home.
The Lynx are 14-9 ATS and 7-5 ATS at home. This is the first time the two teams are facing each other this season.
Indiana is just 6-7 ATS on the road, and the Fever are 4-9 away from Indiana overall, but the Fever appear poised to at least cover here.
Clark has regained her form after averaging nearly 23 points in three games for Indiana in the past week. She also dished out 13 assists in each of those three games, so look for an opportunity with that stat line in this game as well.
Clark, Mitchell and Aliya Boston have firmly entrenched themselves as a top trio in the league right now.
Look for Clark to stay hot scoring and tally more than 17.5 points for the fourth straight game.
Mitchell exploded for a season-high 28 points in the win over the Mercury on Friday night. Less a complement and more of a 1A option for Indiana, Mitchell has been consistent for Indiana all season.
She is averaging more than 19 points in the team’s last five games and looks set to go for more than 16.5 points on Sunday against Minnesota.
With Collier’s return unclear, the Lynx will again turn to second-leading scorer Kayla McBride, who had 27 points against Seattle. She is now averaging 16 points a contest and will need to have another standout performance for Minnesota to pick up the win.
Look for McBride to score more than 16.5 points in this contest.
With Indiana still surrendering north of 87 points a game, taking the over is always a plausible option. That’s even though the Lynx are second in the league in points allowed with 74.6, a number that rose after allowing 91 to Seattle last night.
In each team’s penultimate game before the All-Star and Olympics break, look for a solid up-and-down matchup that totals more than 163.5 points.
