The Indiana Fever have surged since the WNBA returned to action and will be looking to enhance their playoff position when they take on the team immediately below them in the Eastern Conference, the Chicago Sky, on Friday night.
The Fever are rolling right now and are rapidly closing in on a playoff berth that has eluded the franchise the past seven seasons. Indiana has gone 12-6 in its last 18 games and is now just a game under .500 at 15-16.
Kelsey Mitchell had 23 points while Caitlin Clark went for 19 points and five assists as the Fever knocked off the second-place Connecticut Sun Wednesday night, winning 84-80.
The Sky, meanwhile, are trending in the opposite direction. After consecutive tight, two-point losses over the weekend to both Connecticut and the Las Vegas Aces, the Sky lost to the Washington Mystics on Wednesday night, 74-70.
Leading scorer Chennedy Carter missed the game due to health and safety protocols, and her status for Friday night’s game with the Fever is unknown at this time.
Indiana took the first two games of the season series with the Sky at home, but Chicago won the teams’ last meeting in Chicago in June, 88-87.
The Fever have gone 4-1 to start the second half of the season, and currently has the look of a playoff dark horse. In the process, Clark has solidified herself as the Rookie of the Year favorite.
Shorthanded Chicago has gone 1-5 since the start of the second half. With Carter potentially out again and second-leading scorer Marina Mabrey recently traded to Connecticut, this has the makings of an easy Indiana win.
Look for the Fever to cover the 5.5-point spread.
All signs are pointing to this game going to the Under.
Indiana has played to the Under in five of its last seven games on the road, and Chicago has played to the Under in four of its last six games overall.
With Chicago struggling across the board, look for this game to stay Under 164.5 points.
Clark and Kelsey Mitchell are scoring options 1 and 1A for Indiana. Clark is averaging nearly 23 points a game to start the second half of the season.
Look for Clark to put another notch on her belt against fellow rookie Angel Reese and clinch the season series against Chicago for the Fever by scoring more than 19.5 points.
As hot as Clark has been the past five games, Mitchell has been even hotter.
Mitchell is averaging nearly 26 points a game during those contests. She has not scored less than 21 points in a game since the season’s restart.
Look for Mitchell to continue her scoring prowess and tally more than 19.5 points a game.
Reese is averaging exactly 12.5 points a game so far in the second half, but she is only averaging 10 points per contest in three straight losses to Washington, Las Vegas, and Connecticut.
Carter’s absence may provide more opportunities, but Reese only had nine points against the Mystics with Carter sidelined.
Look for Reese to score Under 12.5 points for the third time in four games against Indiana this season.
