The Los Angeles Sparks host the Chicago Sky on Sunday at 6 pm ET, with both franchises looking to make up for a disappointing last season.
The Sky missed the playoffs, going 13-27, while Los Angeles missed the postseason for the fourth straight year and finished dead last in the league at 8-32.
The 2025 campaign is featuring more of the same just a week in. Chicago has lost its first two games by an average of 30 points, while, after defeating the expansion Golden State Valkyrie on opening night, the Sparks have dropped three straight.
Granted, its first two losses came against the emerging Indiana Fever and the defending WNBA champion New York Liberty, but Chicago has looked grossly outmatched. The team is averaging 66 points, nearly six less than the next worst WNBA club, the Seattle Storm. Rachel Barnham (11.5) is the only player on the team averaging in double figures so far.
Angel Reese is grabbing a league-high 14.5 boards a game, but her offensive struggles – she is averaging just seven points – are well documented. Defensively, Chicago is allowing a league-worst 96 points a game.
Los Angeles is more towards the middle of the pack, averaging 79.5 points and allowing nearly 82 points a game. But a nine-point loss at home to the Valkyrie on Friday night does not inspire confidence in new coach Lynn Roberts’ squad.
Who will get a much-needed victory tonight? Below are our experts’ picks and predictions for tonight’s matchup.
Until Chicago can exhibit some kind of competence at either end of the court, take the points. Kelsey Plum should be the difference for Los Angeles. She came over from the Los Vegas Aces and has promptly taken over the team, averaging 24 points a game, third best in the league, while dishing out five assists and recording a league-leading three steals a game.
Her veteran presence and scoring prowess give Los Angeles a foundation to rely on right now. And she’s not alone. Dearica Hamby has made an impressive start, averaging 18.5 points and 8.3 rebounds a contest, and Azura Stevens is going for 15.3 points and 9.5 rebounds a game.
Look for Plum, Hamby, and Stevens to lead another strong collective effort offensively for Los Angeles, and look for the Sparks to win for the first time at home this season and cover the six-point spread as favorites.
Chicago has to break out offensively some time and the Sky haven’t shown they can contain anybody. That is the perfect recipe for a high-scoring contest. Chicago went well over 162 points last time out in a 99-74 defeat to the Liberty, while Los Angeles has totaled more than 162 points two times in four games so far this season.
Our experts expect the teams to push the pace and total more than 162 points in tonight’s contest.
It could be an even better bet just to take the under on any of the Sky individual point totals until they can figure out how to score on a regular basis, but the pick here is to stay with the hot hand.
Plum was held to 16 points on 33% (6-of-18) shooting in Friday night’s loss to the Valkyrie, her lowest output of the season, so she should be properly motivated to rebound tonight. She opened the season with 37 points in the win over Golden State, and had 25 in a tight loss to the Phoenix Mercury Wednesday evening.
Our experts expect Plum to surpass 23.5 points for the third time in five games in her new uniform and guide the Sparks to a victory.
