Ahead of the 2025 Masters Tournament, we look at the odds for an American to win the Green Jacket, as well as the odds for top American finisher.
The Masters has long been dominated by American golfers. In 88 editions of golf’s most prestigious tournament, 64 have been won by an American, including 39 different winners. 40 of the first 43 editions were won by an American, the only exception being three-time champion Gary Player of South Africa.
As time progressed, more and more international players featured in the Masters field, ratcheting up the competition for Americans. Since Spaniard Seve Ballesteros’ famous win at the 1980 Masters, 21 of 45 editions of the tournament have been won by a non-American.
Since 2000, only eight different Americans have won The Masters, while 10 internationals have won it, Jon Rahm’s 2023 triumph being the most recent. Scottie Scheffler is the most recent American to win the Green Jacket, doing so in both 2022 and 2024.

Will a new Masters champion arise from this hugely-talented American field, or will it be a repeat winner?

In the last 15 Masters tournaments, nine different Americans have achieved the status of top American finisher.
Tiger Woods has done it three times, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, and Phil Mickelson have each done it twice, and Will Zalatoris, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, and Matt Kuchar each did it once.
While starting strong on Thursday and finishing the job on Sunday are two wholly different challenges, successfully navigating Augusta National on day one can give a player confidence heading into the remaining rounds.
