The New York Rangers have climbed into a wild card spot with a 7-3-0 run since February 1st. They’ll look to close out a four-game homestand with a third straight win Wednesday after back-to-back 4-0 shutouts. Standing in their way is the Eastern Conference-leading Washington Capitals.

New York swept Washington in the 2024 playoffs, but the Capitals have turned the tables this season, winning both meetings 5-3 and 7-4. Despite those results, there’s little separating the teams lately — since Feb. 1, the Rangers and Capitals rank 28th and 30th in five-on-five expected goals percentage, per Evolving Hockey.

Washington snapped a three-game skid — its longest losing streak of the season — with a 5-4 overtime win against Ottawa and will look to sweep the season series against the Rangers. The Capitals are 7-6 straight up versus New York in the regular season since 2021/22.

The Capitals have been one of the most profitable moneyline bets this season, largely because bettors underestimated them. The Rangers, meanwhile, have been one of the biggest disappointments, falling well short of expectations as Metropolitan Division contenders.

All eyes will be on Alex Ovechkin, who is 11 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time scoring record. Ovechkin has three goals in two games against the Rangers this season and nine goals in 11 games since Jan. 30.
