The Vegas Golden Knights enter the 2024/25 season among the favorites to win the Stanley Cup, but they lost a player in free agency who had been with the team since its first NHL season.
That player is Jonathan Marchessault, who is now with the Nashville Predators. Marchessault won the Conn Smythe Trophy when the Golden Knights won the Cup in 2022/23 as he led all players with 13 playoff goals, and he led Vegas in goals (42) and points (69) in 2023/24.
Still, Vegas has a deep and talented roster. Six players who scored double digit goals for the Golden Knights last season are still on the roster, and the additions of Victor Olofsson (three 20-goal seasons) and Alexander Holtz (16 goals last season) will help replace the production of Marchessault and other players who left this offseason, such as Chandler Stevenson and Michael Amadio.
Vegas snuck into the playoffs last season with 98 points, the lowest number of points out of the eight Western Conference playoff teams. They ranked 12th in both goals scored and goals allowed, so they will look to take a step up on at least one side of the ice this season.
In last year's playoffs, the Golden Knights fell to the Dallas Stars in seven games.
