Vancouver earned two points in a shootout against the New Jersey Devils on Monday after Conor Garland tied the game in the final minute. The Canucks, now four points behind the St. Louis Blues for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference, are in the midst of a six-game road trip, where they have gone 1-1-1 so far.
Also on Monday, the New York Islanders suffered a major setback to their playoff hopes in a controversial game. Kyle Palmieri appeared to score the game-winner with less than 10 seconds remaining, but officials immediately overturned the goal, ruling it as goaltender interference. The Islanders went on to lose 4-3 in a shootout to the Columbus Blue Jackets, shrinking their lead over Columbus to just one point and keeping them one point out of an Eastern Conference wild-card spot.
According to Evolving Hockey, there’s little separating these two teams over the past month. At five-on-five, the Islanders rank 13th in shot attempts and 17th in expected goals, while the Canucks rank 17th and 14th, respectively. In all situations, Vancouver sits 23rd in goals for and 19th in goals against per 60 minutes, while New York ranks 24th and 16th.
That said, Vancouver has won six out of the last 10 games versus the Islanders, including three of the last five meetings, but more intriguing is the fact that this matchup has gone over the total nine straight times.
