A brand new NHL team will take the ice in 2024/25 in the form of the Utah Hockey Club, who will replace the now-inactive Arizona Coyotes as the NHL’s 31st franchise.
Led by owner Ryan Smith, who also owns the NBA’s Utah Jazz, Utah will begin play this season under a temporary name and team colors, while taking up the Coyotes’ “hockey assets,” including the players and coaching staff.
The Coyotes franchise has not eclipsed 40 regular season wins since 2011/12, and has missed the playoffs in 11 of the last 12 seasons. Last season, the team posted a 36-41-5 record with 77 points, finishing 7th in the Central Division.
Unlike expansion teams of the past, such as the Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken, Utah comes into 2024/25 with a clearer set of expectations given the team and coaching staff have a track record together.
