The United States men's national team meets Guatemala in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinal on Wednesday night.
The USMNT defeated Costa Rica on penalties in the quarterfinal after a thrilling 2-2 finish to regular time. Diego Luna and Max Arfsten scored for Mauricio Pochettino's side before goalkeeper Matt Freese played hero, saving three of six Costa Rican penalty kicks to clinch the victory.
The Americans have reached at least the semifinal stage in 12-straight Gold Cups, six of which ended with them lifting the trophy.
Guatemala is in its first Gold Cup semifinal since 1996 after knocking out Canada via penalties in Sunday's quarterfinal. Rubio Rubin equalized for Guatemala in the 69th minute before Luis Fernando Tena's side outlasted the Canadians in seven rounds of penalties, scoring six and missing just once.
Wednesday night's semifinal will mark the first meeting between the U.S. and Guatemala since World Cup qualifying in March 2016, when the nations played two games over four days, each winning one.
