There are a handful of American players with meaningful roles for teams competing in the world's most prestigious club competition.
Keep in mind that traditional Italian powerhouse club Juventus, which has two Americans in Weston McKennie and Tim Weah, is banned from continental competitions this season due to a breach of financial fair play regulations.
We'll track the Americans currently plying their trade in the UEFA Champions League.
Christian Pulisic started in five of Milan's six Champions League group stage games. He scored one goal, which was against Newcastle United in the final matchweek of the group stage. Milan was eliminated in the group stage, but their third-place group finish means the club will compete in the Europa League knockout stage.
Yunus Musah appeared in five of Milan's Champions League group stage matches, starting in four of those games. He did not have any goals or assists, but he made four tackles against PSG on the road, and he had three shot-creating actions against Borussia Dortmund on the road.
Sergino Dest, who has split time between right and left back so far this season, started in five of PSV's six Champions League group stage games as well as both of their qualifying round matches against Rangers FC. Dest picked up an assist in PSV's 3-2 away win over Sevilla, finding Ismael Saibari in the 68th minute to start the team's comeback from 2-0 down in a game that ended 3-2 for PSV. PSV faces Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16.
Malik Tillman has five goals and three assists in the Dutch Eredivisie this season, but he has not produced as much in the Champions League. He has started three of PSV's seven Champions League matches this season, assisting his team's lone goal in a 1-1 draw away to Lens.
Ricardo Pepi has come off the bench in most games this season thanks to the strong play of PSV's first-choice striker Luuk De Jong. He played a full half in the second leg of the third Champions League qualifying round against Sturm Graz, scoring a goal from a penalty in the 3-1 win. He had brief cameos at the end of most group stage games, but he scored the winner in Sevilla in a 3-2 comeback win and he assisted Yorbe Vertessen in a 1-1 draw with Arsenal after both teams had sealed their knockout stage spots.
After getting relegated with Leeds United last season, Brenden Aaronson has struggled for playing time at Union Berlin and has not registered a goal or an assist since his arrival. He played in all six of Union Berlin's Champions League group stage matches, starting once at home against Napoli in a 1-0 loss in which he played 69 minutes. Union Berlin finished last in its Champions League group, meaning the club is eliminated from European competitions this season.
Like Aaronson, Gio Reyna found playing time hard to come by at Borussia Dortmund and the club sent him out on loan to Nottingham Forest in January. While at Dortmund in the first half of the season, Reyna appeared from the bench in just two Champions League games, playing a total of 22 minutes.
Center back Cameron Carter-Vickers starts for Celtic, and he played in four Champions League games before the club was eliminated with a last-placed finish in its group. After missing a few games early in the season, his first Champions League minutes this season came off the bench in a 2-1 home loss to Lazio in early October. He started a 2-2 draw at home against Atletico Madrid, a 6-0 loss away to Atletico Madrid, and a 2-0 away loss to Lazio.
