The United States Women's National Team opens the Olympics - its first major tournament under new head coach Emma Hayes - against Zambia, which is led by NWSL joint-top scorer Barbra Banda.
The USWNT has had two disappointing major tournaments in succession. The first was the last Olympics in which the team settled for the bronze medal, then the Stars and Stripes crashed out of the 2023 Women's World Cup in the round of 16.

Zambia striker Barbra Banda is the joint-top scorer in the NWSL with 12 goals for the Orlando Pride; four USWNT players - Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman and Rose Lavelle - have at least five goals this season in the NWSL.
USWNT forward Smith is second in NWSL in assists with six, Banda is third with five assists, Rodman has four and both Swanson and USWNT left-back Jenna Nighswonger have three.
Zambia forward Rachael Kundananji scored 25 goals in 2,200 minutes in 2022/23 for Madrid CFF in Spain, and she has two goals and one assist in just over 1,000 NWSL minutes for Bay FC this season.
Kundananji is also one of the best dribblers in the NWSL, as she is third with 33 successful dribbles, joint-seventh with 55 progressive carries and eighth with 28 carries into the penalty area, as well as receiving the ninth-most progressive passes with 98.
USWNT goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher is 10th in the league in goals saved above expected, and she has made the eighth-most saves with 45.
With Banda on the field, the Pride have outscored their NWSL opponents by 20 goals this season.

Lynn Williams replaced Catarina Macario in the squad after Macario pulled out due to knee irritation. She returned earlier this year from a two-year absence due to a torn ACL.
Zambia team news
Banda scored two hat tricks in three group stage game at the last Olympics, and Kundananji scored the team's only other goal in the tournament as Zambia were eliminated with one point in the group stage.
