The Americans beat Japan 102-76 in the Group C opener, led by 24 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks from A'ja Wilson and 22 points, eight rebounds and three blocks from Breanna Stewart.

Belgium lost to Germany by an 83-69 score. Three of their players scored double-digit points, led by 2019 WNBA Finals MVP Emma Meesseman's 25 points, and guard Julie Vanloo made as many three-point attempts (four) as the entirety of Team USA did against Japan.
