The generational bantamweight clash between 21-year-old phenom Raul Rosas Jr. and Brazilian veteran Raoni Barcelos has drawn the attention of the sport's biggest names.
Poirier Backs Barcelos After Decades-Old ATT Memories
For Poirier, the pick is personal. "The Diamond" recalled his earliest encounters sharing the mats with Barcelos at American Top Team over a decade ago when former light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira first brought him in.
"Listen, that guy used to beat me up at American Top Team before I knew who he was," Poirier revealed. "Glover brought him into ATT back in the day. I was still at 145... around 2012 maybe. And the guy was working me. I was like, 'Who the hell is this kid?' Ever since, I've been rooting for him. He's been around a minute, had his ups and downs, but man, he can beat anybody."
Poirier pointed to Barcelos’ veteran savvy and past upsets as proof that the Brazilian remains dangerous against any prospect looking to make a name off him.
Masvidal Rides with Youth and Grappling Upside
While appreciating Poirier’s training-room history, Masvidal took the opposite side, picking Rosas Jr. to pass the toughest test of his young career. "Gamebred" believes the matchup favors "El Niño Problema" because Barcelos willingly engages in the grappling department rather than presenting an impenetrable striking style.
"I think this is a big step up for Rosas," Masvidal explained. "It's not like he's fighting some crazy striker that can't be taken down. He's fighting somebody that likes to grapple, that likes to wrestle. And I think Rosas is going to have the youth advantage, the strength advantage, the size advantage. So I'm going to go with Rosas."
Masvidal also highlighted Rosas’ rapid development, praising his work in Las Vegas alongside elite training partners including bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili, Aljamain Sterling, and Marlon "Chito" Vera.
"His grappling is pretty next level," Masvidal added. "Takedowns, off his back, if he's on top of somebody—he's an A-level grappler everywhere."
A Defining 18-Year Age Gap
The clash presents an 18-year age disparity, positioning Rosas Jr. on the cusp of proving his championship ceiling while Barcelos looks to derail another rising contender. Whether youth and size overpower veteran craft will be answered once the Octagon door closes.
