Poirier began his professional MMA career in May of 2009, quickly making a name for himself through a number of different promotions.
He accumulated a 7-0 record in just one year and made his debut in the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) promotion in June of 2010, where he suffered his first loss. He rebounded with a win in November of 2010 before the WEC merged with the UFC and Poirier then made his official debut in the UFC the following year in January of 2011.
