The Travelers Championship gets underway this week at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.
One of the biggest non-major events on the golfing calendar, the Travelers hosts a stacked field year after year featuring the best players on the PGA Tour.
Just a few days after emerging from one of the toughest tournaments in recent memory at the U.S. Open at Oakmont, many of the top players in the world - Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, U.S. Open champ J.J. Spaun and more - are in Connecticut for the PGA Tour Signature Event.
Ahead of Thursday’s first round, let’s take a look at favorites in the First Round Leader market.
Scottie Scheffler | +900 |
Rory McIlroy | +2200 |
Collin Morikawa | +2200 |
Xander Schauffele | +2500 |
Patrick Cantlay | +2500 |
Ludvig Aberg | +2800 |
Justin Thomas | +3300 |
Tommy Fleetwood | +3500 |
Keegan Bradley | +3500 |
Sepp Straka | +3500 |
Viktor Hovland | +3500 |
Sam Burns | +3500 |
Russell Henley | +3500 |
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is +900 to lead after the opening round at the Travelers.
Scheffler won this event last year in a playoff over Tom Kim after shooting an opening round 5-under 65, three strokes behind Kim, who shot 62 to lead all players after 18 holes.
Scottie ranks third on the PGA Tour this season in 1st Round scoring average (68.15), trailing only Keith Mitchell and Sam Ryder, neither of whom are in the field this week. The world No. 1 is coming off, like most, a strenuous outing at Oakmont in which he shot 4-over for the week and finished T7.
Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa are joint-second in the First Round Leader market at +2200.
McIlroy shot 8-under 62 to lead after the first round at the 2022 Travelers, although the 2025 Masters champ has never won the event. Since winning the Green Jacket and completing the career Grand Slam earlier this year, McIlroy admitted he is struggling to find motivation.
Morikawa has just one win (2023 Zozo Championship) since his triumph at the 2021 Open Championship, so the 28-year-old will be hungry as ever to start and finish strong this week in Connecticut.
In his last three showings at the Travelers, Morikawa has gone MC-MC-T13, with his best first round finish in 2024 when he shot a 66, four strokes behind Kim.
2022 Travelers winner Xander Schauffele is +2500, alongside Patrick Cantlay, to lead after Thursday’s round. Schauffele (161st) and Cantlay (116th) both rank outside the top-100 on tour in 1st Round Scoring Average this season, but both are capable of elevating their game in the biggest events, particularly two-time major winner Schauffele.
Ludvig Aberg (+2800), a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, is the only other player shorter than 30/1 to lead after 18.
As shown below, just twice in the past 10 years has the first round leader at the Travelers gone on to win the event.
Year | First Round Leader (Score) | Tournament Winner (Score) |
2024 | Tom Kim (-8) | Scottie Scheffler (-22) (playoff) |
2023 | Denny McCarthy (-10) | Keegan Bradley (-23) |
2022 | J.T. Poston, Rory McIlroy (-8) | Xander Schauffele (-19) |
2021 | Kramer Hickok, Satoshi Kodaira (-7) | Harris English (-13) (playoff) |
2020 | Mackenzie Hughes (-10) | Dustin Johnson (-19) |
2019 | 6 tied (-6) | Chez Reavie (-17) |
2018 | Zach Johnson, Jordan Spieth (-7) | Bubba Watson (-17) |
2017 | Jordan Spieth (-7) | Jordan Spieth (-12) (playoff) |
2016 | 3 tied (-6) | Russell Knox (-14) |
2015 | Bubba Watson (-8) | Bubba Watson (-16) (playoff) |
