When the season began several months ago, it was only fair to expect both the New York Mets and New York Yankees to make a legitimate push to play each other in the World Series.

The reality is that only the Yankees look like a team that is in contention for the playoffs.

 Starting with the Yankees, they followed up a sensational perfect game by Domingo German on Wednesday night with another dominant performance on Thursday. The Yankees beat the Oakland Athletics by a score of 10-4. 

Now with a record of 45-36, the Yankees have won two games in a row. The American League East is still looking to be a lost cause at the moment, considering the Yankees trail the Tampa Bay Rays by 9.5 games and are in third place. 

That being said, the Yankees currently hold the second Wild-Card, ahead of the chasing pack by 0.5 games, but trail the Baltimore Orioles, the first Wild-Card spot by four games. 

With the division quickly becoming a pipe dream, the Yankees can focus on holding their Wild-Card position and just making the playoffs anyway they can. 

During their brief two-game winning streak, the Yankees have scored an average of 10.5 runs per game, while they are allowing just two runs per game. 

As amazing as German’s performance was the other night, the Yankees will need him to continue to make good starts if they want to find themselves in the postseason.

Their offense has clearly been inconsistent this season, shown by the fact that they have scored an average of just two runs during their losing streak.
