Justin Thomas shot a 3-under 68 in the first round of the 2024 Open Championship, and finds his name near the top of the leaderboard.
The 31-year-old American is now fifth in the betting to win outright at +1800, all the way down from +9000 before the tournament.
Thomas’ round was far from straightforward, though. He made just eight pars, along with seven birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. Thomas birdied both 17 and 18 to take the lead into the clubhouse, which he has since given up to Shane Lowry (-5).
His opening round is a major bounce back from last year’s Open at Royal Liverpool, where he shot 11-over 82 to start his tournament before missing the cut. The last time The Open was at Royal Troon in 2016, JT shot an opening-round 67, but went 77-74-73 on his way to a T53.
The following year at Royal Birkdale, he shot another opening-round 67 before shooting 80 in round two and missing the cut.
It may not come as a surprise to some that Thomas outperformed most all of the world’s top players at Troon, given the two-time major champion did the same a week ago at the Scottish Open. Although there, Thomas’ first-round 62 (-8) was followed by 72-71-71 and he finished a measly T62.
