Our resident boxing expert Rob Tebbutt breaks down this weekend's WBO super lightweight title bout between Teofimo Lopez and Steve Claggett and gives his picks and prediction for the fight.
Teofimo Lopez is one of the sport’s great enigmas.
We’ve seen him impress on his biggest nights against Vasiliy Lomachenko and Josh Taylor, but look fairly ordinary against the likes of Jamaine Ortiz and Sandor Martin.
As ever, the big question is what version of Lopez will we get this Saturday night against Steve Claggett?
I do feel that Claggett will be a much better style matchup for Lopez, who conventionally does much better when fighters come at him, rather than move on the outside like Ortiz and Martin.
With that said, I do expect Lopez to produce one of his more spectacular decisive performances this weekend.
Claggett is not the most accomplished fighter, particularly up at 147 pounds, and has had losses at a much lower level. I do expect him to come forward and try and put the pressure on Lopez, but ultimately I expect that to be his undoing.
I also do expect Lopez to get back in the KO column. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen him go through somebody in those early rounds. You’d have to go all the way back to Richard Commey, who he knocked out in two rounds to win the IBF lightweight title.
This weekend, I feel that could well change.
Teofimo Lopez to win in rounds 1-6 at +375 will be my play. I do feel that Claggett will come forward and try and put that pressure on early, and ultimately will play into Lopez’s hands.
If you’d like the extra security of a few more rounds, you can get under 10.5 rounds at -120. I also like the play there.
