All eyes will be on Capital One Arena on Saturday afternoon, with Alexander Ovechkin taking the ice as he nears the all-time NHL goalscoring record.
Ovechkin enters Saturday's game vs. Tampa Bay 12 goals away from besting Wayne Gretzky's 894 career goals. The 39-year-old has 24 games remaining in the regular season to reach the all-time mark, which has stood since March 1999.
The Capitals (38-13-8) are enjoying a stellar season as their star chases "The Great One," and have the Presidents' Trophy in their sights. Meanwhile, the Lightning (34-20-2) are riding a seven-game win streak and sit third in the Atlantic Division.
Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Washington Capitals will start at 12:30 PM ET / 9:30 AM PT on Saturday, March 1 from Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Washington Capitals will be shown locally on FDSN Sun and MNMT in the United States.
In Canada, the game will be shown on Sportsnet and TVA Sports.
Ovechkin's chase for 894 goals has been years, if not decades in the making.
Ovi entered the 2024/25 season on 853 career goals, 41 short of Gretzky's all-time record. Given the Capitals' star's goalscoring record in recent seasons (31 in 2023/24, 24 in shortened 2020/21 season) and potential late-career health concerns, there was no guarantee he would reach "The Great One."
But the 39-year-old started this season scorching hot with 15 goals in 18 game before suffering a broken fibula in November that kept him out for five weeks.
In 25 games since his return, Ovi has 15 goals in 25 games, bringing him to 30 in 43 games played on the season.
Ovechkin is now -190 to break Gretzky's all-time record in the 2024/25 regular season.
