2024 T20 Cricket World Cup: How to watch, dates, venues, rules, teams, players to watch & more

The 2024 T20 Cricket World Cup is coming to the United States and West Indies this June.

Global superstars of the sport will show their skills in front of a new audience in the States, which launched its professional T20 league - Major League Cricket - in 2023.

Teams ranging from the United States and Canada to world powers like India, Australia and reigning T20 World Champions England will compete for the crown.

2024 T20 Cricket World Cup rules

T20 cricket is a limited-over format, which essentially means each team faces 120 balls (similar to pitches in baseball) when they're up to bat. An 'over' consists of six balls, and each team bats and fields for 20 overs, which equals 120 balls.

Once the batting team faces all 120 balls - or if the fielding team records 10 wickets, which are similar to outs in baseball - the batting team is done playing offense for the rest of the game. Individual players can bat until they get out, and the best batters sometimes post individual run totals over 100 in a single match.

The team who bats second has 120 balls to pass the score posted by the first team to bat, and the game ends when the second team hits that target, faces all 120 balls, or has 10 of its batters get out.

Two batters are up to bat at a time, and each time one hits the ball, the batters can run to the other wicket on the field to score runs - one run is scored whenever the batters swap wickets. The players in any batting partnership need to coordinate when to run so they don't get out.

Runs can also be scored by hitting the ball on the ground to the boundary for four runs - called a "four" - or hitting it in the air over the boundary for six runs, called a "six".

Wickets - the equivalent of outs in baseball - are made by catching a batted ball in the air, bowling the ball and hitting the wicket behind the batter, or throwing the ball and hitting the wicket (which, in this context, refers to three stumps grouped at each end of the pitch) before a batter reaches the wicket similar to a force-out in baseball.

2024 T20 Cricket World Cup dates

The 2024 T20 World Cup begins on June 1, when the United States and Canada face off in the tournament-opening match at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas.

The group stage concludes on June 17, and the Super 8 stage - which sees the top two teams in each group advance to a second group stage - begins on June 20. The final Super 8 stage match takes place on June 24.

The best four teams from the Super 8 stage move onto the knockout round. The winners of the Super 8 groups face the runners-up from the opposite Super 8 group. One semifinal takes place on June 26 and the other takes place on June 27, and the final takes place on June 29.

2024 T20 Cricket World Cup players to watch

Some of the world's most talented cricketers will play in the United States and West Indies this summer, and the teams among the favorites are loaded with talent. Many of the top players are coming out of playing in the Indian Premier League, arguably the world's most difficult T20 club cricket league.

India is captained by talented batter Rohit Sharma, whose 417 runs in the recent IPL season ranked 17th in the league.

Sharma will be joined by arguably the deepest collection of batters in the tournament as his teammates Virat Kohli, Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal finished first, fifth, 12th and 16th respectively in runs scored in the 2024 IPL season.

Kohli is the +650 favorite to be the tournament's top batter, while Jaiswal and Sharma both have the joint-third-shortest odds at +1100 to be the top batter.

They'll play with world-class bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. Bumrah is the +600 favorite to be the tournament's top bowler while Siraj is +1600.

Reigning champion England is captained by Jos Buttler - who posted the 18th-highest IPL run average in 2024 - and he's joined by skilled batters Jonny Bairstow and Phil Salt.

Jofra Archer, who has dealt with major injuries in recent years, is England's star bowler, and all-rounders Sam Curran - who captained an IPL team at the young age of 25 this season - and vice-captain Moeen Ali can help win a match in the field, bowling, or batting.

Australia has arguably the best batting partnership at the World Cup in David Warner and Travis Head, and they're joined by two of the world's best bowlers in captain Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, who just played a major role in winning the IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders.

Cummins and Starc are tied for the second-shortest odds to be the tournament's top bowler at +1100 each. Head has the joint-third-shortest odds for top batter at +1100, while Warner has the joint-fifth-shortest odds in the market at +1400.

South Africa also has plenty of talent, led by Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs. The West Indies will be led by captain Rovman Powell, 2024 IPL runs-per-out leader Nicholas Pooran and veteran all-rounder Andre Russell.

The United States will be led by Corey Anderson, New Zealand has strong top-end talent in Kane Williamson and Trent Boult, and Canada's player to watch is Matthew Spoors, who scored 108 runs in his first T20 match for his country.
