Esports: Sunday's Call of Duty League Stage 2 Major match previews

Sunday brings the curtain down on week two of the Call of Duty League Stage 2 Major qualifiers, with three matches on the schedule.

The picture for Stage 2 Major qualification is set to become much clearer, with teams having limited chances to improve their seeding in the final week.

There are three matches on Sunday evening, with the Las Vegas Legion, London Royal Ravens, LA Guerrillas, Minnesota ROKKR, New York Subliners and Atlanta FaZe all in action.

2023 has become something of a nightmare for the London Royal Ravens, who have been unable to build any momentum and look set to struggle once more at the Stage 2 Major.

Since winning their opening matches in the Stage 1 Major qualifiers, Royal Ravens have lost eight matches on the spin, including defeats to Toronto Ultra, Minnesota ROKKR and LA Thieves in this qualifier.

They suffered a heavy defeat to the Ultra in the first week and were subsequently reverse swept by ROKKR, prior to their heavy defeat to the Thieves on Saturday night. Confidence is clearly not high in the camp and it would be a surprise if the Las Vegas Legion did not take full advantage.

They were far from disgraced at the Stage 1 Major, bowing out in the lower bracket at the hands of the subsequent winners and they are 1-1 in qualifiers thus far, beating Seattle Surge and suffering defeat to Boston Breach.

This is a first meeting between the sides and Legion are the correct favourites. Given the strength and experience of their roster, their results thus far have been a shade disappointing, but there is still plenty of time to turn their fortunes around.

ROKKR enjoy healthy Guerillas record

As the odds suggest, there is very little to split these two sides. Both sit in the middle of the pack but a victory for Minnesota ROKKR would propel them into the top three of the standings.

ROKKR lost their opening match of the qualifier to the Boston Breach but they have bounced back in no uncertain terms. Wins over London Royal Ravens and Atlanta FaZe have thrust them into top-four seed contention, with the latter success being particularly impressive.

These sides met at the Stage 1 Major and ROKKR came out on top convincingly, which does not help the case for an inconsistent Guerrillas side. They defeated LA Thieves in their most recent match but suffered an agonising 3-2 loss to Florida Mutineers to kick off the qualifier.

ROKKR have won the last six meetings between the teams, which is an interesting historical curse and they are rightly -138 favourites. They came out on top 3-1 at the Stage 1 Major and a similar result seems likely here.

Subliners are the team in form

OddsNew York Subliners +100, Atlanta FaZe -138

The 2023 Call of Duty League has belonged to the New York Subliners thus far. The roster of HyDra, KiSMET, Skyz and Priestahh started the year with back-to-back defeats, but in 12 subsequent games, they have won 11.

They fought their way through the lower bracket to win the Stage 1 Major, defeating Seattle Surge 4-1 in the final - the team that beat them earlier in the tournament.

They have looked imperious in their two matches in this qualifier and it is rather surprising that their opponents, Atlanta FaZe, are narrowly ahead of them in the betting. The teams met at the Stage 1 Major and it was the Subliners who came out on top 3-1.

FaZe have by far the most eyecatching lineup in the Call of Duty League, with the league’s best player Simp propped up by Cellium, Simp and SlasheR. Their results thus far perhaps do not echo that, however, as they are 1-1 in this qualifier, losing 3-0 to ROKKR on Saturday night.

As always, it would be no surprise to see FaZe bounce back, but the odds do seem to underestimate the +100 Subliners, who have barely put a foot wrong of late and who are the strongest team in the league at present.
