Thompson debuted in UFC in 2012. He won his first fight, against Justin Edwards at UFC 143, via knockout in the first round with a head kick. He earned the Knockout of the Night award for his performance.

He beat Chris Clements at UFC 165 via second-round knockout, and he beat Robert Whittaker at UFC 170 via first-round technical knockout that earned him a Performance of the Night award.
