Stephen Strasburg, 2009 top draft pick and 2019 World Series MVP, retires from MLB

Stephen Strasburg joined the Washington Nationals as a flame-throwing pitcher with huge potential.

13 years after his MLB debut, the 35-year-old is retiring from Major League Baseball, announced Thursday.

Strasburg was the Nationals' top draft pick in 2009, joining the organization from San Diego State. He appeared in 247 games over 13 seasons, all with the Nationals, and had a 113-62 win-loss record and 3.24 ERA in his career.

He is the all-time franchise leader in strikeouts with 1,723, and is top three in Nationals history in wins (113), batting average allowed (.223) and innings pitched (1,470.0).

The former ace has appeared in just eight games since the start of 2020, and has not pitched at all in 2023.

Strasburg's last appearance was on June 9, 2022, where he allowed all seven runs in a 7-4 loss to the Miami Marlins. He pitched 4.2 innings and struck out five batters in his final MLB appearance.

Strasburg won the 2019 World Series and World Series MVP award with the Nats, and was named an All-Star three times. He finished in the top 10 of National League Cy Young Award voting three times - in 2014, 2017, and 2019.
